Hybrid bikes offer the rider a great way to go easily from off-roading to street riding with as little effort as possible. When you’re shopping for a new hybrid bike, it’s good to know the best brands, and how they measure up to each other! It’s also good to know how the bike will measure up to you with the right way to do hybrid bike sizing!
Hybrid bikes come in all varieties of shapes, sizes, colors, you name it. So how can you find the right bike for you? Bike sizing is incredibly simple, once you know the basics! Here are a few tips to get you sized up with the right bike!
Hybrid Bike Sizing
Hybrid bikes can be measured in a number of ways, but generally, most brands stick to the same formula for measuring their bikes. Typically you can find bikes in generic sizes like XS, S, M, L, and XL. These sizes are determined by the manufacturer measuring the distance between the bottom bracket and the bottom of the seat (top of the seat tube).
Remember, each manufacturer is different, so double check that their measurements stack up!
Sizing it Up in the Store
If you are lucky enough to have a bike shop in your area that sells the brand of hybrid bike that you want, then sizing a bike in store is super easy. It takes just a few steps and you’re ready to take your bike home!
- Find the brand and style you like.
- Hold the handle bars firmly
- Step over the bike so that you have one leg on either side
- You should have two to four inches of space between you and the top tube of the bike. You shouldn’t be sitting on the top tube, and it shouldn’t be way lower than you.
- Adjust your seat how you’d like it
- Take it HOME!
That’s it! Hybrid bike sizing in store is incredibly easy and takes no time at all!
Finding the right bike online is just a little bit trickier. You’ll have to know all your measurements and be able to compare them to the bikes measurements. Most online sites have nifty charts to help you with picking out the right size!
There are a few measurements you’ll have to have before you start sizing. First, you’ll have to measure your height. Stand flat-footed and up right on a bare floor, take the measuring tape from the bottom of your foot, to the crown of your head. Boom! Measurement one.
Second, you’ll need to know your inseam. This measurement is taken on the inside of your leg. Measure from your foot to your crotch, on the inside of your leg. Boom! Measurement two!
Once you have YOUR measurements, it’s time to see how they match up to the hybrid bike’s measurements. Look closely at the char provided (if there is one) and you’ll be able to match your measurements to the hybrid bike of your dreams!
Not Measuring Up
No one is perfect. That means that in life there is certainly room for mistakes. The same applies for sizing yourself for a bike online. There are a few things that you can do if you don’t quite get the size right on your hybrid bike.
Firstly, you can ask the manufacturer if you are allowed to return the bike for one smaller or larger. This is probably going to be the easiest way to rectify the problem. You may not get to ride off into the sunset on your new bike, but in a few days of shipping back and forth, it’ll all be just right!
If the bike dealer won’t let you return the bike, you can still make changes! You can buy a different size seat post. This will allow you to adjust the height of the seat, without having to purchase a new bike. You can also purchase a longer or shorter handlebar stem. This will allow the handlebars to move back, or forward, depending upon the desired position!
Hybrid bike sizing can be extremely simple! Whether you buy in store and can easily step over the bike frame, or you have your measurements all set to buy online, it’s not too hard to find the right sized bike for you!
